Using UIU Standard with MDT to Deploy Hardware Independent Images

It has become apparent that more of Big Bang's customers are transitioning from Ghost and other small to mid-tier OS deployment solutions to Microsoft's free tools, namely the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit or MDT. Recognizing this transition, we've included a procedure to incorporate the UIU standard product into an MDT deployment below.

That said, Big Bang has prepared a version of our next generation technology as a bonafide plug-in for MDT specifically. This new UIU version will integrate seamlessly with the MDT Deployment Workbench console and provide access to continuously vetted and updated UIU driver database through the standard application of a OS deployment Task Sequence. Look for the UIUSD plug-in for MDT in the coming months!

Microsoft MDT has the capability to deploy operating systems from pre-configured WIM files, captured using ImageX.

  1. Configure a Base Machine as recommended in the UIU Setup Guide.
  2. Execute the UIU Standard on the configured Base Machine and allow the machine to Shut Down (not Reboot!)
  3. Capture the Base Image using ImageX - (Refer to Capture & Deploy Using ImageX and Best Practices for Using ImageX documents from Big Bang)
  4. Import the captured WIM into MDT
    1. Right-click Operating Systems in the Deployment Share node
    2. Select Import Operating System to begin the wizard
      1. OS TYPE – Select Custom Image File
      2. SOURCE – Browse to the source location of the captured UIU-prepared WIM
      3. SETUP – Select Setup and Sysprep files are not needed
      4. DESTINATION – Enter a previously-unused name in the provided text field
      5. Finish the wizard
      6. Verify that the imported WIM appears under the Operating System node
  5. Create an MDT Task Sequence
    1. Right-click New Task Sequence in the Task Sequence node to begin the wizard
    2. Enter a Task Sequence Name in the provided text field
    3. Choose Standard Client Task Sequence
    4. Choose the Operating System imported and verified above
    5. Specify the Microsoft License Key if required/desired
    6. Enter appropriate Administrator credentials
    7. Finish the wizard
  6. During the Task Sequence execution on a target machine, verify that the default No is selected for capture and Sysprep this image

If MDT Lite Touch Installation (LTI) is employed, other considerations with respect to the configuration of the Task Sequence may be necessary.  Please contact Big Bang Support for additional assistance.

PoirierSM -
Apologies for missing the links. They have both been updated and the documents are available. Please let me know if you need anything else.

In your article you mention two documents from Big Bang, “ImageX Capture” and “Best Practices for ImageX”, but do not provide any links. I checked the Big Bang web site and found nothing. Help!
